Lesson Preparation

Lesson Title: Introduction to Publicity
Objective: The students will be prepared to create an article of publicity for a production.

Lesson Directions

Anticipatory Set/Hook:

Have students break into groups of 3. Ask them to think about the classroom. Have them look around and write down every piece of publicity they see in the classroom.
-Have the students share with the class what they have found.
Have the student get back into groups and have them brainstorm every piece of publicity they can think of that they have seen in the whole school.

Instruction:

Instruction – Ask the students, what is publicity?
· Information given through various media to attract public notice.
Have student return to their groups. In the groups have student brainstorm the question: What are different ways you can publicize? Give the student time to brainstorm and then have them return for group discussion. Have each group write one of their ideas on the board.

Discuss – Publicity should be linked to the production. The creator should take theme, concept, setting into consideration as they create their publicity. Audience should also be taken into consideration.

Modeling – Give students the example of the TV show Friends and how they use coffee mugs to sell their product. Explain how the mug is linked to the production and the audience. Ask students if they have any examples of publicity they have seen that is linked to the production.

Guided Practice – In their groups, have the students decide on a book, TV show, or movie. Then have them brainstorm a few ideas of what would be a good way to publicize it thinking about it being linked to the product and the target audience.

Checking For Understanding – Have the groups share their ideas with the class.

Instruction – Ask the students, when creating a flyer for a production, what should go on the flyer.
· Pictures, Dates, Times, Place, Price, etc.



Assessment:

Assign the students to create a flyer for either a fictional play, a script they are familiar with, or the upcoming school production. They need to include the elements discussed today to reach their target audience.
