Monoacting

grades 9-12

Educational Objective: Students will develop the increased ability to perform a monoact by seeing demonstrations, selecting, cutting, rehearsing and performing a monoact.

Materials Needed: prepared performer of a monologue

Hook: Have an advanced student come in to perform a monoact.

Step 1: Discussion of what a monoact includes. Ask students what they observed in the performance.

--The monoact is a scene with only one person physically present who is acting and reacting as though there was another person there. It is an acted out monologues scene. The invisible person is in the scene but at the moment listening to what the person on the stage is saying. The actor may react as though the invisible person has spoken.

A monoact is an adapted monologue, like one that you would use to audition with.

It is also like a scene, having all the elements you used for performing your scenes but with only you performing.

The 'invisible' person is usually placed in the audience area. The actor, however, maintains the fourth wall. In some instances, it may be appropriate to place the 'invisible' person in the scene with you. It is always best to choose the placement that will be most advantageous to your blocking.

Monoacts are to include the following:

Sets (simple)

Props

Costumes & Makeup

An introduction to the monoact.

--The name of your piece

--Your name

--Brief information introducing your piece

--Times on monoacts are to be between 4-10 minutes.

Step 2: Where to find material.

Find material for your monoact in plays, speeches, novels, readings, films, etc.

The best way to look for a monologue is not to look for a monologue. Don't leaf through play after play in search of those long speeches. Don't pass up scenes of rich, energetic dialogue, with relationships and events that are in the here and now and involve the other characters in the scene.

The speeches in plays are usually portions where the character is retelling events that have already taken place. Avoid these memory pieces. Choose material in which you react to somebody.

Choose and develop material for which you feel a sense of immediacy.

*You must have a strong emotional identification/connection to the material.

*You should feel that YOU might say the same words in the same situation.
