Standards:

Standard L1.T.CR. 6: Apply basic research and skills to construct ideas about the visual composition of a drama/theatre work.

Standard L1.T.CR.1: Develop imagination to create artistic ideas and work.

Essential Questions:

  • What are the elements of design? 
  • What do these elements communicate? 

Enduring Understandings:

Students will understand that elements of design are all around us.

Objective:

Students will explore how the six elements of design are incorporated in the world around them everywhere through the playing of bingo and identifying the various elements that they are seeing on a walk around the school.

Instruction:

HOOK: (15-20 minutes)

  • Welcome everyone to class 

    • Take roll! 
  • Have students take out their chrome books 
  • We are going to play a Blooket! (this is a newer, kahoot like program that the students love) 

    • Allow students to play 2 different games

BINGO CREATION: (15 minutes)

  • Have students put away their chromebooks into backpacks. 
  • Explain to the students that we are going to go on a design walk. And that while we walk the students are going to try to win blackout bingo! 
  • Up on the screen put up the slides with the design language options for the students to look for as they walk. 

    • The slides will have a list of potential bingo square options.
  • Students will need to fill in their bingo board with one item per square.
  • The square in the middle is a free square.

WALK AROUND THE BLOCK: (15-20 minutes)

  • Once students have filled in the board entirely: 

    • Have them grab a book to bear down on 
    • Have them grab a writing utensil 
  • Walk around the school

    • Students should be identifying the elements of design that they are seeing

      • Ex. Smooth textured floors
  • Walk around until 10 students have gotten bingo

    • When they get bingo have them come and show it to you 

      • Make sure that there are examples of where they saw it or it does not count. 
  • Take them back to the classroom 

    • Have them turn in their bingo sheets.
  • Have them sit down.

QUIZ: (15-20 minutes)

  • Study for 5 minutes (if time permits) 
  • There is a quiz up on your class canvas page! Take it! 

    • Chromebooks and/or phones will be needed for this part of the lesson.
    • This is a 5 question quiz made from a random mixture of the blooket questions that they saw at the beginning of class. 

CLEAN UP: (5 minutes)

  • Put away all of the crayons, the markers, the scissors, ect. 
  • Throw away scrap paper 
  • Clean up the room
  • Sit in your seats!
  • Release them at the bell.
