INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

Hook – Tell the students that they will be going to the auditorium today to learn how to uses the lighting board! Remind the students that it is a privilege to go into the auditorium and if they cannot handle being in that space then we will leave immediately. If they can handle being in there, next class period you will take them onto the cat walk in small groups.

Transition – Before going to the auditorium have each student grad a “Theatre: Art in Action”. Every student will get their own book so that they may work on a handout while in the auditorium waiting to go into the Sound Booth.

Have each student come up to the front of the class and grab a text book. Make sure to count the number of books taken so that you know how many need to be returned at the end of the period. Once everyone has a book have them form a single file line so that they can orderly walk to the auditorium. Once in the auditorium they will sit in the top section leaving an empty seat between them and the next person. This is to help them stay focused on their book notes while the teacher is with half of the class in the Sound Booth.

Group Instruction- Give everyone the handout for the 15 steps of “Rigging a Lighting Baton”. Split the class into two groups. Divide the groups so that there is an even balance with those who will need extra help in writing down notes. Remind the class that they are on a trial period to see if the can handle going up on the cat walk the next class period. Those who do not go into the both will work on the 15 steps from the book.

When in the Sound Booth give everyone the guided notes for how to use “The Light Board.” Go through the notes giving examples of each word and how it is used on the light board. Frequently check in by asking questions.

Discussion- Allow the students to come up with lighting ideas to try out as you are making examples. Do this with both groups. It takes about 30 minutes to get through the notes once.

Once the first group goes through the notes switch with the other group. Remind the group that will be without you to be studying and writing the 15 steps to rigging a lighting baton. The steps must be finished in class because next class period we will be physically hanging a light.

Group Instruction- Go through the notes with the second group of students.

Closure- Once both groups are finished gather everyone together in the auditorium. Have discussion on the importance of knowing how to use the light board. What will be the importance of knowing how to set a cue? How will that help the audience have a magical experience in your theatre? Why do you want to run lights for a show?
